Intel and CPU Numbers

If you change major features, change a model number. Its that simple.

Linksys and D-Link often make a model number and have several hardware revisions. However the external feature set is the same to end users. This makes sense. However Intel does not follow this practice. One would expect if you buy an Intel xxxx, that all of the same model CPU would have the same features correct? Not true. Look at this excerpt from the Intel E5400, a common dual core processor.

Some of them have the Intel® Virtualization Technology (VT-x) and some don't. The only way to tell is to look at the CPU or box and check the spec code. This makes ordering a CPU a dangerous proposition! This is a major change. The fact that Intel did not change the model number (i.e. E5401 at least) is a very poor practice.
